The relationship between coastal communities and the ocean is undergoing a radical shift. For decades, coastal engineering meant fighting the water—building massive concrete seawalls, groins, and bulkheads to hold back the tide. Today, a more harmonious discipline is taking over: Blue Engineering.
Blue engineering (also known as eco-engineering or nature-based marine engineering) focuses on designing infrastructure that works with natural marine processes rather than against them. Over the last ten years, two coastal powerhouses, Long Island, New York and the state of Florida (bolstered by research from institutions like Florida State University) have become major living laboratories for these innovations.
Long Island:
Renewable Waves and Clean Water Tech
Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Long Island Sound, New York’s longest island has spent the last ten years transforming its relationship with its waters.
- The Offshore Wind Revolution
Long Island has officially become the epicenter of the United States’ blue energy economy. Projects like the South Fork Wind Farm (completed in early 2024 as the country’s first utility-scale offshore wind farm) and the massive ongoing Sunrise Wind project have pushed ocean engineering to its limits.
- The Engineering Challenge: Designing turbine foundations that can withstand extreme Atlantic winter storms while minimizing the acoustic impact on marine mammals during installation.
- The Blue Solution: Implementing advanced bubble curtains (walls of air bubbles pumped from the seabed) during pile driving to dampen sound waves and protect local whale populations.
- Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRBs)
On the shores of Long Island’s bays, nitrogen pollution from outdated septic systems has historically caused devastating toxic algal blooms. Over the last decade, Stony Brook University’s Center for Clean Water Technology pioneered the engineering of Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRBs). These are underground carbon-rich walls (often made of woodchips and sand) injected along the shoreline. As groundwater flows through the barrier toward the bay, natural bacteria inside the PRB convert harmful nitrogen into harmless gas, filtering the water before it ever touches the marine ecosystem.
Florida State:
Nature-Based Protection and Living Shorelines
Further south, Florida faces a unique double threat: intensifying hurricanes and a delicate coral reef system. Researchers across the state, including teams at Florida State University (FSU) and Florida Sea Grant, have spent the last ten years shifting away from gray concrete infrastructure toward vibrant, living systems.
- Hybrid and Living Shorelines
Instead of replacing eroded beaches with rigid bulkheads, Florida engineers have turned to living shorelines. By combining strategic structural components (like heavy rock or wave-attenuating reef balls) with natural vegetation (like mangroves and smooth cordgrass), these systems absorb wave energy dynamically.
- Why it works: Unlike concrete walls that deflect wave energy and erode neighboring properties, a living shoreline slows the water down, allowing sediment to settle and actually build land over time.
- Keystone Species Aquaculture as Infrastructure
Blue engineering in Florida extends beneath the surface to biological restoration. A major focus over the last decade has been scaling up the production of herbivorous sea urchins and sponges to act as natural water treatment systems.
- Reef Lawnmowers: Engineered hatcheries have successfully restocked sea urchins onto Florida’s coral reefs. The urchins act as natural lawnmowers, clearing away suffocating macroalgae so new, resilient coral larvae can anchor and grow.
- Living Filters: On Florida’s Nature Coast, engineered sponge restoration projects have successfully deployed communities of native sponges. These organisms serve as powerful, self-sustaining biological filters, drastically reducing coastal darkening by cleaning the surrounding water column.
The last ten years have proven that the most durable coastal defenses are the ones that mimic nature. Whether it is a wind turbine engineered to protect whales on Long Island or a marsh-and-reef system designed to buffer storm surges in Florida, blue engineering is setting a new standard for how we live alongside our oceans.
